In today's class, Mr. Paterson looked through some of the student's biography photos and paragraphs and gave us some advice. He told us how our bio statements were supposed to play a role in manipulating the readers, and this technique is utilized in advertisements as well. We watched a clip created by IKEA, which was aimed to manipulate the viewers into pitying a lamp that was being thrown away. I felt that the video did a great job in manipulating me because I could not notice the various techniques used to make me feel emotional when watching the video. Mr. Paterson pointed out how the video was structured to make us feel sad and sorry for the lamp. When the lamp was being thrown away, it was being carried the same way we carry babies, and it is left on the street next to a garbage bag. The place where the lamp is left to be taken away is thought out as well. It is left at an angle where the lamp can see the new lamp through a window, thus seeing who(what) replaced them. Alongside slow/sad background music, it enables viewers to be manipulated into not throwing a usable lamp.
From today's class, I have been able to notice just how easily we viewers and listeners are being manipulated on a day-to-day basis by the media. It makes me concerned if the information I am receiving is plausible, and makes me feel a bit uneasy with what I should and should not believe. I felt like I need to be able to critically think about the things I see on the Internet and not be so easily deceived.
